Mozilla plans war on fragmentation, reveals unified UI design for Windows 8 and mobile devices

Image

Mozilla has shown off ideas for future versions of Firefox as it becomes less of a traditional browser and more of a "soft, friendly, human" ecosystem. Slides released on the web hint at a new desktop environ with a simplified menu, cleaner download interface, and a more functional startpage -- all the while maintaining the same curved-edge look as the mobile variant. A Windows 8 Metro tile-based version is also in the works that's similar to the Firefox tab layout on Android. There's no word when Mozilla's so-called Kilimanjaro project will come to fruition, but you can check out the slideshow after the break for an early glimpse.

Ricardo Almeida making UFC debut as a judge Saturday at UFC on Fox 3

Ricardo Almeida is set to make his UFC debut on Saturday -- as a judge. The UFC veteran trained to be an MMA judge after retiring a year ago. With the UFC headed to his home state of New Jersey for UFC on Fox 3, Almeida is getting his first shot at judging from Octagon-side.

Almeida told ESPN that he expects to be nervous for the fights.

"It will be pretty intense, but I will be on my toes with this UFC event, because I know all eyes are going to be on me," Almeida said. "Yeah, I'm going to be nervous. It'll be like I'm walking into a fight myself. But the spotlight only makes me want to be sharper and do a better job."

He made the decision to join the judges' ranks after ending his career on a controversial decision. With a BJJ background and 18 MMA bouts on his resume, Almeida brings a different perspective to MMA judging.

MMA is full of judging controversies, as fans, media and promoters often see a different result than the people charged with calling the winner of a fight. Most recently, Carlos Condit's win over Nick Diaz was called into question. Almeida hopes to help with that problem.

"There is always going to be controversy, but the more we can get guys who understand what's going on inside the Octagon, the results are going to be a little more consistent," Almeida said.

The lack of enough quality judges to keep up with the sport's growth is one of the biggest issues facing the sport. The problem is that MMA, in the form it exists today, has not been around for generations. In other sports, officials and judges have been involved with the sport since childhood, and have done their job at lower levels before moving up to officiate the pros.

In MMA, the judges quite often come from other disciplines. Though they have learned MMA, it's not the same as having it ingrained in your mind for most of your life, or even having a pro career for 11 years, as Almeida did.

Almeida's jump to the judges table is a good start for MMA. As more fighters retire from the sport, hopefully they'll follow his lead.

Vancouver and Calgary High Conflict Child Parenting Lawyers and ...

Vancouver and Calgary?Child Guardianship Parenting Coordinators, Kelowna ?Fort St John Parenting Coordination under the new British Columbia?Family Law Act ? and Alberta?s Family Law Act.

Highly rated Lorne MacLean, QC is often retained in very high conflict custody cases to bring an objective, fair and child focused strategy in contested child custody, guardianship and parenting responsibility cases but more recently?there is also a growing participation of Calgary and Vancouver parenting coordinators to try to reduce court applications and help parents in toxic child custody battles to redirect their energy to more positive goals for their children and themselves.

Parenting coordination is a?child-focused dispute resolution process?for separated families. Parenting coordinators are experienced family law lawyers, counselors, social workers and psychologists who have training in mediating and arbitrating parenting disputes, and infacilitating communication between parents and assisting with implementation of post separation parenting agreements and orders.

Calgary Parenting Coordinators and Vancouver Family Mediation

Shelagh Kinney of the MacLean Family Law Group is a member of the BC Parenting Coordinators Roster Society, and a family law lawyer with over 22 years of experience in family law matters. The BC Parenting Coordinators Roster Society is a group of British Columbia family law lawyers and mental health professionals who have established a program to train and organize parenting coordinators in BC. She can be reached directly at shelagh@bcfamilylaw.ca or toll free in BC and Alberta at 1-877-602-9900.

Following a separation, some parents find themselves in constant conflict, which may include numerous court interventions and applications even after an agreement or order that was intended to be a conclusive determination of parenting issues.? Parenting coordination is a process that gives such parents access to a method of neutral dispute resolution out of court. The parenting coordinator is a neutral, trained decision-maker who can resolve day-to-day parenting conflicts as they arise, with the goal of minimizing further conflict and additional appearances in court. Parents in conflict can retain a parenting coordinator on their own initiative or be referred to a parenting coordinator by the court. Since its? introduction to this province,? the use of parenting coordinators in British Columbia is increasing, both by agreement between separated parents and in certain ?high conflict? cases, through court appointment.

The provisions of the new British Columbia?Family Law Act?which are expected to come into effect over the next year include sections which are aimed to encourage resolutions of family matters out of court through alternative dispute resolution processes such as parenting coordination.? A ?family dispute professional? is defined in the new Act as including a family justice counsellor, a parenting coordinator, a lawyer advising a party in relation to a family law dispute, a mediator, or an arbitrator.? Pursuant to Division 3 of the?Family Law Act, a parenting coordinator may assist the parties if there is an agreement or order in place providing for the use of the parenting coordinator. The authority of the coordinator to act for the parties ends after 2 years unless specified to end earlier, and can be extended for further periods of no more than 2 years.? To be a parenting coordinator under the new?Family Law Act,? a person must meet the requirements which will be set down by regulation to the new Act.

?

Once appointed by agreement or order, the?Family Law Act?provides for the parenting coordinator to assist in building consensus between the parties including by creating guidelines respecting implementations of orders or agreements and for communication and resolution of conflicts, and to make decisions on specified matters including parenting arrangements and contact with a child. The Act specifies that the parenting coordinator will not make a decision that affects the division or possession property and division of family debt.? If a party does not agree with the decision made and applies to court to change or set it aside, the court may do so if satisfied that the parenting coordinator acted outside his or her authority or made an error of law or of mixed fact and law.

Commercial space shuttle prototypes fly through wind tunnel testing

Commercial space shuttle prototypes fly through wind tunnel testing

A pair of companies developing their own commercial space shuttles are presumably trying to flatten their hair after some rigorous wind tunnel testing. First up, Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos (the guy behind Amazon), a company that's remained pretty quiet on its efforts to shuttle astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Space Vehicle setup will plump for a biconic shape (seen above), with a flattened side and a split flap. According to Blue Origin's president, Rob Meyerson, the shape allows greater volume than traditional designs, but forgo the "weight penalty" of winged craft. Compared to earlier capsules, the Space Vehicle's shape, with its fuselage flap to generate lift, should also give it better control on re-entry to earth.

Juggling for wind tunnel time, Sierra Nevada's Dream Chaser has also been blasted with smoke to test its own air resistance credentials. Its module would lauch from the top of the rocket, and glide (as much as anything that costs this much can) back to earth like NASA's own space shuttles. The Dream Chaser is planning its first flight for this fall. You can check out its more traditional take on the future of space travel after the break -- and decide which of the two you'll want sending your children to the mines.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 review

Image

We'll stop just short of quoting Top Gun here, but if it's speed you crave, these next thousands of words could have you emptying your wallet. How's that for an opening line? To be honest, it's been quite some time since any of us Engadget editors booted up a brand new device and immediately let loose a stream of expletives -- all expressing unbridled delight, of course. Such was the beginning of our meet-cute with Acer's Iconia Tab A510, the company's first Tegra 3 slate, and the second to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Apart from that 1280 x 800 TFT LCD display, this 10-incher looks, feels and performs nothing like its predecessor, the A500. Turbocharged with that quad-core CPU and 1GB of RAM, this Android 4.0 tablet joins a crowded category with a generous 32GB in built-in storage and a reasonable $450 price tag to match. So, does that excellence lose its luster with more extensive use? Is your money better spent on any of the other umpteen tablets running ICS? Will the lack of a higher-quality display prove too much of a con for your exquisite tech tastes? Follow on as we probe the A510 for answers.
