Int?l Teenager Art Festival opens in Hanoi
The International Teenager Art Festival was held in the Hanoi Children?s Palace on March 24, with the participation of children from Russia, Japan and Vietnam.
The festival helped audiences learn more about the three countries and contributed to strengthening friendship between Vietnamese people and other nations in the world.
It also aimed to celebrate the 81st anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and 71st anniversary of the establishment of the Ho Chi Minh Pioneer Unit.
Addressing the programme, the Vice President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO), Vu Thi Hai, said that the event offered an opportunity for Vietnamese and international children to exchange and learn more about cultures through songs and dances of the three countries.
Aleksey Yu. Lavrentiev, Director of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, emphasized that this was a festival of peace and friendship.
The event was co-organized by the VUFO and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture.
Asia-Europe Short Film Contest calls upcoming filmmakers
Asia-Europe Short Film Contest is open for submissions from now until April 9, for a citizen of any of the 46 ASEM countries, between the ages of 18 and 35.
The contest is being organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), in partnership with NYU Tisch School of Arts-Asia and the National Library Board of Singapore.
Participants can upload their short films by registering on the website: http://www.asef.org/index.php/shorts by April 9.
Jury members will shortlist the finalists to choose four winners.
An additional winning film will be chosen by the public via online voting.
Winners will each receive a paid trip to Singapore, including three nights in a hotel, to receive their award and to attend a two-day international filmmaking workshop at the NYU Tisch School of Arts-Asia in Singapore.
The winner of the first prize in the contest will also receive a cash prize of SGD5000.
All submitted short films will be screened for the international public in Asia and Europe at different ASEF events.
The Short Films Contest Awards Ceremony will be held in Singapore on May 17.
Artists travel to new destinations
A new exhibition titled Destination I captures artists? desires to share their ideas and culture.
The show includes 21 paintings by five Vietnamese and two Malaysian artists, Yusof Ghani and Zaim Bin Durusalam.
It intends to create a place for artistic exchange between Vietnamese artists and their audiences and colleagues both at home and abroad.
Ghani is one of the most well-known Malaysian artists, who was introduced to the world through his four-part series Dance, Mask, Play and Green.
Destination I includes two new paintings from his 2011 series Force, one of which is composed of nine, 58cm by 45cm panels creating a huge image of natural colours.
He came to Viet Nam many years ago but this is his first exhibition in the country.
The exhibition introduces five Vietnamese artists: Ngo Hai Yen, Nguyen Than, Vu Hoa, Ngo Van Sac and Luu Tuyen. Sac and Tuyen concern themselves with social issues in Viet Nam today, such as violent games and addiction, while the three others express their feelings about life.
The exhibition Destination I will run through April 1 at Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street.
Vietnamese people?s favorite books announced
The book titled ?I Am Gifted, So Are You? by Adam Khoo has just won first prize of the ?FAHASA ? Vietnamese People?s Favorite Book? contest, in which readers vote for the books they like most.
At the award ceremony on Friday at the Ho Chi Minh City?s 7th biennial book festival at Le Van Tam Park, the Japanese famous comic book ?Doreamon? by Fujiko Fujio and ?Kinh DoanhTheo Mang ? Nghe Tuong Lai? (Internet-based Business ? Job of The Future? by Tran Trung Kien won second prizes.
The third prizes went to another Japanese well-known comic book ?Conan? by Gosho Aoyama and ?How to Win Friends and Influence People? by Dale Carnegie.
Nguyen Nhat Anh, the renowned local author for children also won two consolation prizes for his books ?Cho Toi Xin Mot Ve Di Tuoi Tho? (Give Me A Ticket to Childhood) and ?La Nam Trong La? (Leave inside The Leaves).
Launched from last August, the contest held by FAHASA Publishing House gathered around 14,970 votes from readers across the country.
The organizer said they will make the contest a biennial event to be kicked off 6 months before the city?s book festival.
Listen to Benji Boko?s DJ mix in Hanoi
Benji Boko, who recently made a big impression with his dance music mix, will give a performance at ATK music club in Hanoi on March 31.
Benji will be re-inventing party tunes, cartoon themes and movie soundtracks for devotees at ATK.
His completely improvised live remixing has led DJ Yoda to describe him as ?the future? of party music and is the reason why 17,000 people danced to his New Year tunes at the O2 Arena in London.

An Oratorio concert to be held in Hanoi
An Oratorio concert titled ?Messiah? will be held at the Hanoi Opera House from April 13-14.
Basses Thang Long and Manh Dung, alto Huong Diep, tenor Thanh Binh and Hanoi International Choir, Hanoi Freude Choir, Choir of Vietnam National Opera and Ballet and Choir of Hanoi University of Art and Culture will join the performance under the baton of conductor Graham Sutcliffe.
Other than this, music lovers will have a chance to enjoy classical music works in a concert at the Hanoi Opera House from April 5-6.
Japanese harper Yoshino Naoko and Choir of Vietnam National Opera and Ballet will perform under the baton of conductor Honna Tetsuji.

Hanoi Soundstuff returns with 20 local, int?l artists
German DJ and editor Sven Von Th?len will perform at the 5th Hanoi Soundstuff concert.
Twenty local and international artists from seven different countries will perform at the 5th Hanoi Soundstuff concert to be held in the capital from March 28 to April 14.
Among the international artists from UK, Germany, Japan, Austria, and Denmark, DJ and editor Sven Von Th?len from Germany is special name.
Th?len has been the editor of De:Bug magazine for over ten years. Together with artist Fritz Zander, the DJ has released House and Techno compositions produced by Berlin-based Bpitch Control.
House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the American city of Chicago, Illinois in the early 1980s, whereas Techno is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan in the United States during the mid to late 1980s.
Sponsored by the Goethe Institute in Hanoi, the event will present a diverse range of music, including experimental works, in both outdoor and indoor locations.
In addition to music shows, short films will be screened during the event thanks to support from Future Shorts Hanoi.

The annual exhibition of works by students of the Sculpture Faculty at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University is being held in the city until March 28.
According to a press release from the Applied Arts Gallery, the exhibition, which opened Friday, March 23, comprises 50 artworks in various materials and styles.

Korean singer to join local diva?s national tour
Local diva My Linh has invited South Korean singer Im Tae Kyung to be the guest singer of her national tour, titled ?Va em se hat?? (And I Will Sing) to mark her 20-year singing career, VnExpress Newswire reported.
The tour, which will start next month in Hanoi, is planned 6 months after her successful live concert series ?My Linh Tour?06? that helped strengthen her position in the local music industry.
Born in 1975, My Linh is known for her powerful vocal and pioneering and experimental projects with classical music and acoustics.
She is considered by both audiences and critics as one of the four divas of Vietnam beside Thanh Lam, Hong Nhung and Tran Thu Ha.
Considered as the Michael Bubble of South Korea, Im Tae Kyung is a classical pop artist who has won numerous prizes.
In the tour, My Linh and Im Tae Keung will perform famous international songs together.
?It is very difficult for the two of us to either sing in Korean or Vietnamese, so we decided to sing in English together,? My Linh said.
Band Anh Em (Brothers), which has been collaborating with My Linh for 15 years, will still perform in the tour.
The band includes big names in the musical industry such as songwriter Huy Tuan and songwriter and producer Anh Quan, who is My Linh?s husband.
Hong Kien, the tour?s art director said he wanted to portray My Linh through his personal angle as a close friend and long-time colleague.
The diva will sing the most well-known hits from her early career in the 1990s including ?Thi tham mua xuan? (The Whispers of Spring) or ?Ha noi dem tro gio? (Hanoi in a Windy Night) as well as her recent experimental works.
The show will be held on April 11-12 at the Vietnam-Russian Cultural Friendship Center in Hanoi, on May 12 in HCMC and on May 25 in Da Nang.
Japanese culturist to lecture on arts as basis for nation building
Oriza Hirata, one of the most influential opinion leaders on the arts scene in Japan, will give a lecture on ?Arts and Culture as the Basis of a Nation? in Hanoi at 6 p.m. on March 30.
The event will be held at Conference room (6F Building D), National Library of Vietnam by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam in the capital city.
According to a press release from the organizer this week, in his thought-provoking book, ?Geijutsu rikkokuron [lit. Arts as the Basis of a Nation]? (2001), Oriza argued that the key to restoring Japan is in the attempts to put the arts as the basis of a nation, beyond the obsession of economic growth.
His vision in this book won him the AICT (Association Internationale des Critiques des Th?atre) Critique Award in 2002.
?Why should we put the arts and culture as the basis of a nation? How can we do so?,? asks the release.
In his lecture in Vietnam, Oriza will use his multiple experiences as a playwright, a director, a manager of a private-sector small theater and a professor for several universitie to set out concrete ideas and opinions on cultural policies for a nation. He also has first-hand experience as a Special Advisor to the Japanese Cabinet (2009-2011).
At a time when Vietnam is developing rapidly and the society is changing drastically, the lecture will provide a good opportunity to re-think the position of arts and culture in Vietnamese society, and to consider how to shape cultural policy in Vietnam.
The lecture will be presented in both Japanese and Vietnamese. Admission is free.

11th grader writes song for Earth Hour
Nguyen Hoang Khai, an 11th grader at Hong Duc High School in HCMC?s Tan Phu District, has written a song to support Earth Hour next Saturday.
The song, Khuc ca Viet Nam (The Vietnam Melody), has been picked up by the 3-member boy band, Magnet Band, from Hanoi.
The band shot a clip for the song and uploaded it on Youtube last Monday. The clip has been viewed over 2,000 times and is getting more popular among local musical fans.
?I hope my song can help raise people?s awareness about Earth Hour,? said Khai, who is also head of an environmental protection students? group.
Tourist services available in palace?s old maids? quarters
Tourist services have been launched at Binh An Duong, a vestige of imperial maids in the former royal capital of Hue.
Showrooms of traditional medicine, specialities and souvenirs are opened with food and drinks.
Binh An Duong is located at 1 Dang Thai Than Street, northeast corner of Hue City.
Under the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945), it was a place for convalescence and shelter to imperial maid corpses before burial.

Competition to design souvenirs launched to promote tourism
A souvenir design competition was launched on Thursday in Ha Noi to promote tourism.
The designs would be divided into State souvenirs and common souvenirs. The contest organisers have asked that they be unique and beautiful in order to present the identity of the people and the culture, tradition, costumes and landscape of the country.
Contestants have been encouraged to make their designs with durable materials that are safe, transportable and friendly to the environment.
Entries can be sent to the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition at 38 Cao Ba Quat Street, Ha Noi, on June 10-20.
Traditional Vietnamese martial arts attract French friends
French martial artists aged from 5-60 joined members of the Vietnam Traditional Martial Arts Federation to put on a demonstration in Paris on March 22.
The performances attracted a wide audience including French friends and fans of Vietnamese martial arts, as well as overseas Vietnamese.
Addressing the event, Serge Sciberras, president of the Vietnamese Martial Arts Federation in France, welcomed the Vietnamese delegation to major cities in France to introduce the martial arts.
Sciberras said his organization is hoping to sign a partnership agreement with the Vietnam Cultural Centre in France to develop traditional Vietnamese martial arts in France, Europe and around the world.
Nguyen Khac Trinh, a member of the Vietnamese delegation, said an increasing number of foreigners are very interested in these martial arts and want to learn and practise them.
Hung Kings festival to attract many OV representatives
More than 30 Overseas Vietnamese (OV) delegates from 19 countries, including Laos, Thailand, the UK, Poland, Finland, France, the Czech Republic, Angola and Malaysia, will attend the Hung Kings festival in Phu Tho province from March 27-30.
The State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA) on March 23 said that it will organize activities for these delegations while they are in their homeland. In addition to joining an incense-offering ceremony at Hung Kings festival, they will visit some places in Lao Cai province, such as border posts and landmarks, as well as listening to an introduction about border demarcation and marker planting.
These activities demonstrate the ideal: ?when drinking water, remember its source? of Vietnamese people, and the Party and State?s attention to the overseas Vietnamese community.
