Analysis: Calm Romney pins hopes on momentum

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is acting like a challenger who feels he has enough momentum and time to overtake the president by Election Day, two weeks from now.

Judging from Monday's final debate, President Barack Obama almost seems to agree.

Obama was clearly the more aggressive combatant in the 90-minute forum, whacking Romney's personal investment record, truthfulness and overseas fundraising. Romney, meantime, went out of his way to blunt his differences with Obama on several key foreign policy matters ? supposedly the debate's focus ? and to appear calm, moderate and non-threatening.

Romney's approach was one typically taken by front-runners: Do no harm. Don't stir the pot. Keep the clock running.

Obama's forcefulness appeared chiefly aimed at discouraged Democrats who might not bother voting, rather than at the sliver of undecided voters in the handful of states still in play. Romney is not the benign, acceptable alternative he claims to be, Obama seemed to be saying, and I, your president, am finally willing to fight tooth and nail for a second term after sleepwalking through the first debate, which triggered Romney's rise in the polls.

"It's all get-out-the-vote now," said Matt Bennett, a veteran of Democratic campaigns. "If you're undecided now, you ain't voting."

"Obama will win the debate on points," Bennett said, "but it won't matter much."

A number of other Democrats shared that view. Interest in the third and final debate probably suffered, they said, from voter fatigue, competition from televised football and baseball games, and the official topic ? foreign policy ? in a campaign dominated by jobs and the economy.

These Democrats, however, don't necessarily think Obama will lose. Some feel Romney took a big gamble by being so tame in the final face-to-face encounter.

Obama still holds a slight edge in Ohio in most independent polls. It's the state that can almost seal the president's re-election if he holds it, because it would force Romney to sweep virtually every other contested state, including tough Wisconsin.

Romney's stay-the-course demeanor Monday points to confidence that his slight rise in the polls will continue, even if only a smidgen of voters are truly undecided. Democrats note that many thousands of people are already voting through early balloting programs in key states.

The election's outcome may turn on whether Obama's get-out-the-vote ground troops can outrun Romney's momentum. Polls show Romney doing considerably better among likely voters, as opposed to registered voters. That gives Obama's volunteers a chance to hunt down thousands of "soft supporters," and persuade them to get to a polling place.

From the debate's opening minutes, Romney showed no appetite for verbal fisticuffs. Moderator Bob Schieffer invited the former Massachusetts governor to critique Obama's handling of the fatal attack on a U.S. Consulate in Libya, a topic Romney had fumbled in the second debate, six days ago.

Romney showed no interest. Instead, he congratulated the president on the killing of Osama bin Laden, hoping to negate an Obama strong point as quickly as possible.

Throughout the evening, Romney continued a recent trend of moderating his foreign policy positions. He seemed bent on presenting himself as a sound commander in chief, even if it required him to narrow his differences with the president.

Romney offered unusual praise for Obama's war efforts in Afghanistan, declaring the 2010 surge of 33,000 U.S. troops a success and asserting that efforts to train Afghan security forces are on track to enable the U.S. and its allies to put the Afghans fully in charge of security by the end of 2014.

Romney said U.S. forces should complete their withdrawal on that schedule. Previously he has criticized the setting of a specific withdrawal date.

And on Iran, Romney mollified his previous criticism of Obama's sanctions policy. He stressed that resorting to war to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon would be a last option, softening the hawkish tone that had been a hallmark of his campaign.

Longtime GOP strategist Terry Holt defended Romney's soft touch.

"His first goal is to appear presidential," Holt said. "This is not a grand jury where all he has to do is indict. People are looking to him for presidential qualities. Cool, calm and clear."

Obama, by contrast, looked for every chance to criticize Romney on as many topics as possible.

"Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s," Obama said.

He chided Romney for having said Russia was America's greatest geopolitical foe. "The Cold War's been over for 20 years," Obama said.

"Presidents always have an advantage when debating foreign policy," said Republican consultant Matt Mackowiak. "Romney did well enough tonight to maintain his momentum and win this race."

Obama has 14 days to stop that momentum. He plunges in immediately Tuesday with events in Delray Beach, Fla., and Dayton, Ohio. On Wednesday and Thursday the president plans to campaign in Iowa, Colorado, California, Nevada, Florida, Virginia and Ohio.

Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, on Tuesday were headed to Nevada and Colorado. Romney planned to campaign Wednesday in Nevada and Iowa, and Thursday and Friday in Ohio.

Neither ticket can afford to write off the other competitive states. But Ohio seems destined to be the testing ground of whether Obama's tiny lead and big ground operation can hold off Romney's October momentum.

Pussy Riot members transferred to prison colonies

(AP) ? A lawyer for the two jailed Pussy Riot band members says they have been transferred to prison colonies hundreds of miles from Moscow to serve their sentence.

Mark Feygin said Monday that Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were transferred during the weekend from Moscow prison, where they were kept since March. Feygin said prison authorities informed him that Alekhina had been sent to the Perm region in the Urals and Tolokonnikova to the central province of Mordovia. He could not confirm the information with his clients.

Alekhina, Tolokonnikova, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred in August for performing a protest prayer against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral in February, and given two-year sentences. Samutsevich was released on appeal earlier this month.

Russell Means, Indian activist, actor, dies at 72

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Russell Means never shunned attention. Whether leading Native Americans in railing against broken federal treaties, appearing in a Hollywood blockbuster or advocating a sovereign American Indian nation within U.S. borders, the activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee reveled in the spotlight.

But it was only on his terms. Openly critical of mainstream media, the onetime leader of the American Indian Movement often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. Instead, he chose to speak to his fan base through YouTube videos and blog posts on his personal website.

When he did speak out publicly, he remained steadfast in his defense of AIM. He found himself dogged for decades by questions about the group's alleged involvement in the slaying of a tribe member and the several gun battles with federal officers during the 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee, but denied the group ever promoted violence.

"You people who want to continue to put AIM in this certain pocket of illegality, I can't stand you people," Means said, lashing out an at audience member question during an April gathering commemorating the uprising's 40th anniversary. "I wish I was a little bit healthier and a little bit younger, because I wouldn't just talk."

Means, who announced in August 2011 that he had developed inoperable throat cancer but told The Associated Press he was forgoing mainstream medical treatments in favor of traditional American Indian remedies, died early Monday at his ranch in in Porcupine, S.D., Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said. He was 72.

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Means grew up in the San Francisco area before becoming an early leader of AIM. He often was embroiled in controversy, partly because of AIM's alleged involvement in the 1975 slaying of Annie Mae Aquash.

But Means also was known for his role in the movie "The Last of the Mohicans" and had run unsuccessfully for the Libertarian nomination for president in 1988.

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to protest the U.S. government's treatment of Native Americans and demand the government honor its treaties with Indian tribes. Means told the AP in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians, and that Native Americans were ashamed of their heritage.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said. "And there was a plethora of dozens if not hundreds of athletic teams that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

The movement eventually faded away, the result of Native Americans becoming self-aware and self-determined, Means said.

Paul DeMain, editor of News from Indian Country, said there were plenty of Indian activists before AIM but that the group became the "radical media gorilla."

"If someone needed help, you called on the American Indian Movement and they showed up and caused all kind of ruckus and looked beautiful on a 20-second clip on TV that night," DeMain said.

Means and AIM co-founder Dennis Banks were charged in 1974 for their role in the Wounded Knee uprising, but after a trial that lasted several months, a judge threw the charges out on grounds of government misconduct.

Means said he felt his most important accomplishment was the founding of the Republic of Lakotah and the "re-establishment of our freedom to be responsible" as a sovereign nation inside the borders of the United States. His efforts to have his proposed country recognized by the international community continued at the United Nations, he said, even as it was ignored by tribal governments closer to home, including his own Oglala Sioux Tribe.

But others may remember him for his former organization's connection to Aquash's slaying. Her death remains synonymous with AIM and its often-violent clashes with federal agents in the 1970s.

Authorities believe three AIM members shot and killed Aquash on the Pine Ridge reservation on the orders of someone in AIM's leadership because they suspected she was an FBI informant. Two activists ? Arlo Looking Cloud and John Graham ? were both eventually convicted of murder. The third has never been charged.

Means blamed Vernon Bellecourt, another AIM leader, for ordering Aquash's killing. Bellecourt denied the allegations in a 2004 interview, four years before he died.

DeMain, an Indian journalist who researched the case, said AIM's leaders know who ordered Aquash's killing but have covered up the truth for decades.

Also in 1975, murder charges were filed against Means and Dick Marshall, an AIM member, in the shooting death of Martin Montileaux of Kyle at the Longbranch Saloon in Scenic. Marshall served 24 years in prison. Means was acquitted.

In addition to his presidential bid, Means also briefly served as a vice presidential candidate in 1984, joining the Larry Flynt ticket during the Hustler magazine publisher's unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination. Flynt was typically a Democrat.

But Means always considered himself a Libertarian and couldn't believe that anyone would want to call themselves either a Republican or a Democrat.

"It's just unconscionable that America has become so stupid," he said.

His acting career began in 1992 when he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans." He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in his autobiography, admitting to his frailties and evils but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Salomon, the tribal spokeswoman, called Means' death a "great loss" for the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Means' death came a day after former U.S. Sen. George McGovern died in Sioux Falls at the age of 90. McGovern had traveled to Wounded Knee with U.S. Sen. James Abourezk during the 71-day takeover to try to negotiate an end.

"I've lost two good friends in a matter of two to three days," Abourezk said Monday morning. "I don't pretend to understand it."

U.S. prepared to meet one-on-one with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to block that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor said in a statement. He noted that efforts to get Iran back to the table with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany ? the so-called "P5+1" ? continue.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election campaign and Vietor's statement was released shortly after The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Vietor, however, denied that any such agreement had been reached.

"It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," he said. "We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear ambitions will likely be a topic. Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy, which began during President George W. Bush's administration, hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort. Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran and says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing as it continues to defy international pressure, including four rounds of sanctions from the U.N. Security Council, to prove that its atomic intentions are peaceful.

Those sanctions, coupled with tough measures imposed by the United States and European nations are taking their toll, particularly on Iran's economy. Iranian authorities have in recent weeks been forced to quell protests over the plummeting value of the country's currency. The rial lost nearly 40 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar in a week in early October, but has since slightly rebounded.

U.S. officials say they are hopeful that pressure from the sanctions may be pushing Iran's leaders toward concessions, including direct talks with the United States. But several said on Saturday that they did not believe such discussions would happen any time soon.

If one-on-one talks are to occur, they would likely follow the model that the U.S. has used in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea, the officials said.

In those discussions, U.S. negotiators have met separately with their North Korean counterparts but only as part of the larger effort, which also involves China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. Direct U.S.-North Korean talks are preceded and followed by intense consultations with the other members of the group.

However, the direct talks with North Korea have yet to bear fruit and U.S. officials warned that talks with Iran may not yield anything either. If U.S.-Iran talks do occur, they would likely be part of the P5+1 process, which groups the Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States and is overseen by the European Union. The group has met numerous times with Iranian officials but has yet to achieve any significant progress.

In late September, the group instructed EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to reach out to Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, to organize another meeting. No date had been set for the possible resumption of talks.

Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes but Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel.

Israel has threatened to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't stop uranium enrichment a process that can be a pathway to nuclear arms. Israel could decide to strike Iran's nuclear sites on its own, and Israeli leaders say time to act is running out. They have also hinted they would like U.S. support for any such attack.

An Israeli strike on Iran with or without Washington's involvement would likely draw retribution from Tehran including possible attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests overseas or disruptions to the transit of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which could send oil prices skyrocketing.

Obama has counseled patience as public as American public support for another Mideast conflict is low with the Iraq war over and the conflict in Afghanistan winding down.

Romney ups criticism of Obama's second-term plans

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Heading into the campaign's final weeks, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is upping his criticism of President Barack Obama's plans for a second term, accusing the Democrat of failing to tell Americans what he would do with four more years. The Obama campaign is aggressively disputing the notion, claiming it's Romney who hasn't provided specific details to voters.

At campaign events and in a new ad out Saturday, Romney is setting up the closing weeks as a choice between what he says is a "small" campaign that's offering little new policy and his own ambitious plan to fundamentally change America's tax code and entitlement programs.

The new Romney ad criticizes the president's policies on debt, health care, taxes, energy and Medicare, arguing that Obama is simply offering more of the same. The campaign did not say where the spot would air.

"Have you been listening to the Obama camp lately? They have no agenda for the future, no agenda for America, no agenda for the second term," Romney told a crowd of thousands who gathered in a band shell just off Daytona Beach. "They've been reduced to petty attacks and silly word games. Just watch it ? the Obama campaign has become the incredible shrinking campaign."

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, continued the line of criticism Saturday at campaign stops near Pittsburgh and in Belmont, Ohio, saying Obama has not laid out a policy agenda for the country.

"He's not even telling you what he plans on doing," Ryan told a rain-soaked crowd of about 1,100 people at a campground in coal-rich eastern Ohio.

Ryan urged people to vote early, saying, "The one thing you can do is elect a man named Mitt Romney who will end this war on coal and allow us to keep these good paying jobs."

Obama's campaign disputes the notion that the president hasn't outlined a detailed second-term agenda, pointing to his calls for immigration reform, ending tax breaks for upper income earners, fully implementing his health care overhaul and ending the war in Afghanistan.

In a statement sent after Romney's Friday night event, Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner ticked through a series of policy items, calling them "just part of President Obama's agenda for a second term."

Obama, at the Democratic National Convention, called for creating 1 million manufacturing jobs over the next four years with a mix of corporate tax rate cuts and innovation and training programs. He has set a goal of cutting the growth of college tuition in half over the next 10 years. He also has called for Congress to pass proposals he made last year that include includes tax credits for companies that hire new workers and funding for local municipalities to hire more teachers, police officers and firefighters.

As for why Republicans would back the same proposals they have already voted against, Obama has told supporters he expects his re-election would "break the fever" on Capitol Hill that led to gridlock during his first term.

The president's aides are particularly irked by the questions about Obama's second-term agenda, because they say it's Romney who has failed to provide voters with details. They point to his refusal to provide specifics about his tax plan or outline what he would replace the president's health care overhaul with if he makes good on his promise to repeal the federal law.

An independent group backing Obama, though, is trying to renew attention on Romney's tenure at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The group, Priorities USA Action, is redoubling its efforts against Romney, re-airing an ad about an AMPAD plant in Marion, Ind. That spot features former employee Mike Earnest recalling being told to build a stage from which officials of the office supply company later announced mass layoffs.

He says, "It was like building my own coffin." That ad first aired in battleground states in the summer.

Romney aides have said AMPAD was a struggling business to begin with, and Bain overall created many more jobs than were lost.

That ad will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin. The new campaign will be in addition to a $30 million effort against Romney policy proposals, the group said.

Both Obama and Romney retreated from the campaign trail Saturday to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he is huddled with advisers preparing for the debate. Among those with him are White House senior adviser David Plouffe and senior campaign strategist David Axelrod. Aides say Obama was also being assisted by National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and former Obama aide Karen Dunn.

Romney was to spend the weekend in Florida with aides preparing for the debate.

Romney running mate Paul Ryan planned campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Ohio on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden was headed for St. Augustine, Fla.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News. It will be similar to the first debate, with both men standing at lecterns on a stage. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.

Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ on Friday that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions. "His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Obama stuck with domestic policy themes Friday, accusing Romney of moderating his stands and conveniently forgetting his past positions on economic and women's issues and coining a new campaign term for what he described as his opponent's condition: "Romnesia."

Romney has spent large amounts of time off the campaign trail to prepare for the upcoming foreign policy debate. Aides say the additional time preparing is well-spent even if it comes at the expense of public events.

The president planned an extensive tour of battleground states following the debate, with events in Florida and Ohio on Tuesday, including a joint event with Vice President Joe Biden in Dayton, Ohio, before returning to the White House.

On Wednesday, Obama was packing his schedule with around-the-clock campaigning in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas, followed by events in Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; Chicago and Cleveland on Thursday. The campaign dubbed it the "America Forward!" tour.

Aides said the president planned to sleep aboard Air Force One from Las Vegas to Tampa on Wednesday night and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops. In a nod to the campaign's push for early and absentee voting, Obama was voting early in person in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday.

Unexpected: School taxes go south | River Falls Journal | River Falls ...

The school board Monday night unanimously approved a 2013 tax levy that will result in slightly lower property tax bills for constituents.

Due to conservative earlier estimates and a state-aid boost caused by an infusion of part-time, four-year-old kindergartners, the final levy for taxpayers is lower than predicted at the September Annual Meeting.

The levy to support school district operations for the 2012-13 year is $17,576,603, a more-than $300,000 drop (1.8%) from the last year.

Finance Director Chad Smurawa had forecasted a modest 2.1% tax levy hike. School district residents who turned out for the Sept. 17 Annual Meeting voted to approve that amount.

Instead, one month later, the news is that school taxes will drop.

While the figure will vary depending on what town or city people live in, Smurawa estimated a $40 decline for the average $200,000 home.

For a $100,000 home, about half that amount ($20) in savings. For a $300,000 home, roughly a third more ($60) in savings.

Smurawa said the tax drop is even more significant because of the November 2011 approval of one referendum question for $19 million.

That debt load was expected to be another force boosting school taxes. Instead, due to declining interest rates and refinancing, the debt load has been less of a financial burden.

?Taxes were supposed to go up, but they?re going down,? Smurawa said.

He explained two other factors that have shaped the school district?s tax levy outlook:

  • Some 150 four-year-old children participating in the new half-day kindergarten program (RF4C) at a half-dozen sites in the district.

Statistically for purposes of state aid, these children count as 75 full-time students. Their presence offsets an 18-student decline in overall enrollment and boosted state aid to the district.

  • Area property values declined more than the anticipated 2% in September. Again, this boosts state aid to cover the difference.

The actual decline district-wide was 2.2%, for a total valuation of $1,610, 415,988.

Since the 2008 Great Recession, the district?s property valuation has declined from a peak of $1,925,046,904.

Top 10 Twitter Effective Marketing tips for you business | Debbie ...

Error: Invalid GA Profile ID set. The format should ga:XXXXXX, where XXXXXX is your profile number

Twitter is one of the newest social media websites on the internet, giving bloggers and other internet users a completely new way to communicate with one another. Twitter is all about micro blogging, or communicating through small, quick spurts of content. Anyone who knows how to benefit from regular blogging formats can also find advantages in using Twitter, which offers the same benefits of blogging but in a quicker and more bite sized format. Here are ten tips for effectively marketing on twitter. twitter marketing

1 ? First and foremost, you need to know the difference between posting often and spamming. You do not want to spam Twitter. Instead, you are going to want to post meaningful, relevant and readable content that your subscribers are going to look forward to. Spamming is the ultimate mistake that many twitter marketers end up making early on in their marketing endeavors. Twitter is a social network, not a medium for spamming, and if you overwhelm your readers with spam, no one will stop by anymore. It may be tempting to spam, but you will never benefit from it, so do not waste your time.

?

2 ? Know what you intend to promote when you start posting on Twitter. This is absolutely paramount when it comes to understanding how to get the most out of twitter marketing in order to drive business to your website or your door. If you know your product well, and you understand what it is going to take to market it, then you are already a step ahead of everyone else, and this is a really good place for you to be.

twitter marketing3 ? It is vital that you know what kind of information you need to put out there, both when you?re writing your own Tweets and when you are responding to the messages of others.

?

When you have a planned out routine for how you will communicate with other businesses online, you will be more successful with Twitter and those who you communicate with on the service.

4 ? One of the greatest boosts to your Twitter marketing endeavor will be to learn how to communicate effectively on Twitter. You can use twitter as a medium for conversation, but only if you know how to communicate effectively with those who are reading your Twitter feed.

5 ? In order to get the most out of your Twitter marketing endeavor, it is vital that you learn how to participate in the community, communicating properly in the process. Twitter is largely a community based social networking site, so while you may be blogging on the site for your own business purposes, you will not get anywhere unless you are willing to participate in the conversation, communicating with other businesses, consumers and other individuals as well to get the word out about your business and to share something of yourself with the rest of the community.twitter marketing

6 ? Make the most out of your account. Create a profile page with a picture and some information about your company. This allows the people who are reading your Twitter feed to get to know you better, which is what social networking sites like Twitter are really all about. The more your readers are able to get to know you, the more likely they will return time and time again to see what you are writing about.

7 ? Have a plan going in, if you want to get the most out of your Twitter endeavor. Do some research and get to know what Twitter is really all about before you start posting on your own. Devise a basic outline for posting, and once you have a good solid plan you can get started. The better planned out your endeavor is, the more you will be able to benefit from marketing your business, product or service through Twitter.

8 ? Avoid over promoting your product. While you can and should post about your product or service in your twitter posts, do not make this the sole focus of your Twitter account. Post all kinds of relevant information about your company, your products, the industry and anything else that is relevant, rather than overwhelming your readers with posts on a single topic. If you?re selling a product and using Twitter to accomplish it, your readers will expect some marketing and product promotion, but you must take absolute care not to overwhelm them with it if you want your readers to continue following your Twitter feed.twitter marketing

9 ? Facilitate conversation! Nobody said Twitter had to be all about sharing information; you can also facilitate conversation by asking questions. Take polls, ask thoughtful questions and come up with other unique ways to get your readers to respond to you in order to better market yourself on Twitter. Conversation is an important part of marketing your company through Twitter, so get your readers talking by asking smart questions in search of smart answers.

10 ? Follow relevant Twitter feeds. When you ?follow? a new Twitter feed, the owner of that feed is notified. By notifying Twitter feed authors that you?re reading them, you are cluing them in to your existence, which will build traffic for your own marketing campaign as well.

Follow these ten basic strategies for improving your marketing effort on Twitter and you will notice a big difference in how much traffic Twitter can bring to your business. Marketing on Twitter is not difficult, but there are some basic rules that you need to follow if you want to be successful in such an endeavor. Whether you are selling a product or a service, or just trying to gain attention for your web presence, Twitter is an advantageous way to attract interest in who you are and what your company is all about.

Got a burning question for Prudie? She'll be online at Washingtonpost.com to chat with readers each Monday at noon. Submit your questions and comments here before or during the live discussion.

Dear Prudie,
I'm a 30-year-old woman, married to a woman, and three months pregnant with our first child. We've begun sharing the good news with our nearest and dearest, but I'm befuddled by some of the reactions. After exclaiming "Congrats!" most people launch into questions about the mechanics of our pregnancy, everything from "How did this happen?" to "Who's the donor?" to "Which college did the donor attend?" It would be one thing if these were acquaintances or strangers, where I could brush them off. But how do you tell dear friends and family members that the ins and outs aren't any of their business? My wife and I aren't ashamed; we simply don't think the donor's biographical info or the details of our fertility treatments should be up for grabs. I get flustered and say more in my answer than intended. Is there a quick way to shut down the conception questions without offending our loved ones?

Dear Baby,
?How did this happen?? are four words that should not be uttered consecutively to a woman who has just told you the happy news of her pregnancy. Of course you are entitled to tell your loved ones nothing. But I?m not sure shutting down the subject of the paternity of your child is the best approach in the long run. As gay people marry and have children in greater numbers, this is something many more couples will have to address. In one sense your situation is similar to that of heterosexual couples who go through fertility treatment. Some share their experiences with those closest to them; others prefer to keep it entirely private. In another way, it?s analogous to adoption in that a child born to a gay or lesbian couple requires genetic material from a third party. Adoptions used to be shrouded in secrecy, even shame. The identity of the biological parents was sealed, and some children were never even told. Fortunately, that?s all changed, and it?s accepted that children are entitled to know their biological origins. Musician Melissa Etheridge and her then-partner Julie Cypher finally revealed their children were fathered by David Crosby because they felt keeping the secret was a burden, and their daughter, at age 3, was asking if she had a daddy. (And yes, I?m aware that Etheridge?s romantic life has been as tumultuous as that of any rocker.) Of course, David Letterman won?t be pressing you on national television for the name of the father, but in just a few years your son or daughter will be wondering, and you want to be able to answer in an honest and in an age-appropriate way. It?s important, especially when you?re around family and close friends, that your child doesn?t get the impression there is something embarrassing or shameful about his or her conception. That?s why I think that you should give your family and friends the general information, but say for now you?d prefer to keep the details of the father?s identity private. You could say something like, ?The biological father is a dear friend, but he?s not going to be involved in the raising of our child.? Or, ?We used a sperm bank and the father not only went to college, he appears to be a delightful person.? Having a confident and comfortable response to your loved ones will be good practice for conveying to your child this topic is a happy one and not taboo.

Dear Prudence: Third-Wheel Twin

Dear Prudence,
After being married for 10 years, I developed an interest in dominance and submission. I don't know where this new interest came from, but I began having frequent fantasies of submitting to a powerful woman. I told my wife that I'd like us to try it, but she declined. She wasn't judgmental or condemnatory, she just said it wasn't for her. I tried to get over it, but it became an obsession. I felt that if I didn't find an outlet, I would explode, so on three occasions I visited a professional dominatrix, in secret. They were incredible experiences and even exceeded my fantasies, but three was enough. I fulfilled my desires and was done. Although these encounters were highly erotic, they did not include sexual acts. That was two years ago. Since then, I?ve felt quite guilty about having deceived my wife. She believes I've always been faithful, and I feel like I'm living a lie. In the interest of having an honest relationship, should I confess?

Dear No More,
I assume you?re saying that although you?ve been a very naughty boy, your genitals were not involved when you went to get yourself disciplined. I think it?s fair to say that while you were skirting the edge, you have not been unfaithful to your wife. Going to a strip club is erotic, but it doesn?t constitute infidelity. Let?s say you confess. If you open this box of whips, you and your wife will be forced to discuss what you did and why you kept it secret. Even though you can assure her that the urge has been slaked, she will be left having to contend with the image of you trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey with another woman?s leather boots on your back. You indicate you have a good and loving wife, so doing that to her seems unnecessarily punitive. You dealt discreetly with an odd episode (oh, the quirks of the human psyche!), and no one got hurt. If it will make you feel better, I command you to keep quiet.

Dear Prudence,
I live with my girlfriend and her 10-year-old son, with whom I get along very well. However, I have a major problem with the lack of boundaries. He slept with her until I moved in about a year and a half ago. He has adjusted to sleeping on his own, but she still sleeps with him anytime I'm not around. I can't watch a movie with them because he lies on her and rubs her legs the entire time. In public, he presses against her body and kisses her chest. At a restaurant he has to be touching her the entire meal. He walks around naked at bedtime, and when she puts him to bed he gives her a massage. He also touches and rubs me when we sit down to do anything. Most guys I know don't treat their mother like their girlfriend, but he doesn't show any signs of stopping. I believe it's Mom's job to set boundaries and help him understand that he isn't a little baby anymore, but I don?t know what to do.

New model reconciles the Moon's Earth-like composition with the giant impact theory of formation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? The giant impact believed to have formed the Earth-Moon system has long been accepted as canon. However, a major challenge to the theory has been that Earth and Moon have identical oxygen isotope compositions, even though earlier impact models indicated they should differ substantially. In a paper published October 17 in the journal Science online, a new model by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), motivated by accompanying work by others on the early dynamical history of the Moon, accounts for this similarity in composition while also yielding an appropriate mass for Earth and the Moon.

In the giant impact scenario, the Moon forms from debris ejected into an Earth-orbiting disk by the collision of a smaller proto-planet with the early Earth. Earlier models found that most or much of the disk material would have originated from the Mars-sized impacting body, whose composition likely would have differed substantially from that of Earth.

The new models developed by Dr. Robin M. Canup, an associate vice president in the SwRI Space Science and Engineering Division, and funded by the NASA Lunar Science Institute, involve much larger impactors than were previously considered. In the new simulations, both the impactor and the target are of comparable mass, with each containing about 4 to 5 times the mass of Mars. The near symmetry of the collision causes the disk's composition to be extremely similar to that of the final planet's mantle over a relatively broad range of impact angles and speeds, consistent with the Earth-Moon compositional similarities.

The new impacts produce an Earth that is rotating 2 to 2.5 times faster than implied by the current angular momentum of the Earth-Moon system, which is contained in both Earth's rotation and the Moon's orbit. However, in an accompanying paper in Science, Dr. Matija ?uk, SETI Institute, and Dr. Sarah T. Stewart, Harvard University, show that a resonant interaction between the early Moon and the Sun -- known as the evection resonance -- could have decreased the angular momentum of the Earth-Moon system by this amount soon after the Moon-forming impact.

"By allowing for a much higher initial angular momentum for the Earth-Moon system, the ?uk and Stewart work allows for impacts that for the first time can directly produce an appropriately massive disk with a composition equal to that of the planet's mantle," says Canup.

In addition to the impacts identified in Canup's paper, ?uk and Stewart show that impacts involving a much smaller, high-velocity impactor colliding into a target that is rotating very rapidly due to a prior impact can also produce a disk-planet system with similar compositions.

"The ultimate likelihood of each impact scenario will need to be assessed by improved models of terrestrial planet formation, as well as by a better understanding of the conditions required for the evection resonance mechanism," adds Canup.

Canup used smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to simulate the colliding planetary objects using 300,000 discrete particles whose individual thermodynamic and gravitational interactions were tracked with time.

UK Muslims unite behind girl shot by Taliban

In Britain?s Muslim community, a large portion of whom are of Pakistani heritage, there has been keen interest in the case Malala Yousufzai, the schoolgirl shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban for advocating education for girls.

The attack has united many in her native country in outrage. Demonstrations and vigils have taken place in support of the teenager, who was airlifted Monday to Britain to receive specialized medical care and protection from follow-up attacks threatened by the militants.

Yet in Britain, too, campaigners for the empowerment of young Muslim women say the attack has struck a chord in parts of society where traditional attitudes, in particular those carried over from rural northern Pakistan, still manifest themselves through resistance ? in a minority of families ? toward education of girls.

?Malala is a role model because even though we are not facing the Taliban here in the UK, there are a number of girls who face that backward mentality. So I think definitely she has become an inspiration for standing up against force at such a young age,? says Sabbiyah Pervez, a young mother and university graduate in the northern English city of Bradford, home to one of Britain?s largest Muslim populations.

Ms. Pervez, who coordinates projects to empower young Muslim girls, stresses the major educational advances made by Britons from a South Asian community, such as the fact that many are excelling. But she says that some girls are still being pulled out of schooling at 16 because parents feel that if the girls get educated, they will challenge their parents.

?It?s to constrain and restrict them. I know a girl who was pulled out of school at 16 and she summed it up perfectly for me: ?They have cut my wings to fight and fly,? " she said.

A particularly harrowing case brought the spotlight on such attitudes earlier this year, when two British Pakistani parents were sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering their teenage daughter, Shafilea Ahmed, in 2003 because they believed she had brought shame on the family with her desire to lead a "Westernized" lifestyle. She had defied her parents' wishes for an arranged marriage in Pakistan to a much older man.

The case is cited by rights advocates as one that opened eyes and sparked debate, a process continued by Malala?s case.

At the same time, observers advise caution about allowing headlines and coverage of individual cases, such as that of Shafilea Ahmed, to obscure the broader trend of young British women from South Asian backgrounds furthering their education and being encouraged by their parents to do so.

In fact, the achievements of schoolboys from the same backgrounds are being eclipsed by their female peers, notes Claire Dwyer of University College London, who co-authored research based on interviews with young British Pakistani Muslim women about their career aspirations.

?In the context of men not being able to get work, what was particularly striking from many of the girls we spoke to was that they saw their education as being not just for themselves but in order to be breadwinners in the future,? Dr. Dwyer adds.

The findings suggested that British Pakistani working-class families with little experience of education support the greater opportunities for education and work for their daughters, and may even invest more in daughters, as girls outperform boys at school and the labor market is more receptive to female workers with "soft skills," like interpersonal abilities.

Meanwhile, farther south in Birmingham, where Malala is hospitalized, her arrival has engendered feelings of a different kind among Muslims living there.

"There is a strong connection [between the two places] because of the large number of Pakistanis who live in the city, I am proud that Birmingham has stepped in to help this situation," Qayyum Choudhury, chairman of the Council of British Pakistanis, told the BBC.
