Smear Test to Help Doctors Detect Cancer at Early Stage | TopNews ...

A recent Lancet Oncology study has revealed that cancer can be diagnosed at early stage through smear tests, which would help in preventing deaths occurring from cancer. For the study, the researchers took samples from Dutch women.

During the study, the researchers also looked for human papillomavirus (HPV) and through smear tests; the doctors were able to pinpoint the signs of early stage of cancer. Following the findings of the study, the researchers are now asking to include the tests for women so that women vulnerable to cervical cancer could be diagnosed at earliest.

In UK, women in the age group of 25 to 65 are called for smear test after every three years. For the smear test, a sample of cells is taken from the neck of the womb. The sample thus taken is closely monitored under microscope. Through the observation, one can actually point out early signs of cancer.

In UK, teenage girls have already been vaccinated against HPV. But still, there are many women who might be leaving under the threat of HPV. If the smear tests are introduced for women then women with early sign of cervical cancer can be diagnosed.

The medical experts are of the view that the smear tests can be used for detecting various types of cancers which are often missed by screening. However, before the smear tests are made available for HPV testing, it?s is necessary to ?answer some outstanding questions about how HPV screening could work in the real world, including how best to manage women who receive a positive HPV test result, and what to do for younger women?, says Jessica Harris from Cancer Research UK. Professor Julietta Patnick, the Director of the NHS Cancer Screening Programme has recommended that further studies should be conducted on smear tests.
