O?Connor, Anne-Marie. The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt?s Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer . Knopf. 2012. c.400p. photogs. bibliog. index. ISBN 9780307265647. $30. FINE ARTS
This is an extraordinary biography, not merely of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the subject of one of Gustav Klimt?s most famous paintings, but also of the work itself and the world of early 20th-century Vienna. The painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) was famous before its record-?breaking purchase in 2006 at $135 million by Ronald S. Lauder for his New York?based Neue Galerie. Through her painstaking research, O?Connor (Washington Post) manages to capture the cultural, historical, and political climate that gave birth to this painting. She describes the anti-Semitism that permeated early 20th-?century Vienna and the role that Jews played (often as outsiders) in that society. Stolen by the Nazis during World War II and renamed The Lady in Gold (to avoid any hint that its subject was Jewish), the painting was at the center of an eight-year battle by Bloch-Bauer?s niece Maria Altmann to regain her family?s legacy. ?VERDICT Although the narrative is somewhat episodic, the history is fascinating. This is an essential title for readers interested in art history, European history, and Judaic studies. Highly recommended.?Herbert E. McLeese, Don. Dwight Yoakam: A Thousand Miles from Nowhere. Univ. of Texas. (American Music). Mar. 2012. c.232p. discog. ISBN 9780292723818. pap. $19.95. MUSIC
In spite of Dwight Yoakam?s popularity and impressive ability to cross musical boundaries, no biography has ever before been published. Award-winning music critic McLeese (New York Times Reader: Arts & Culture) fills that gap with this jaunty, affectionate, honest, and compelling book. Drawing on interviews with Yoakam and his friends and fellow musicians, McLeese guides us through Yoakam?s early years in Kentucky and Ohio in the 1970s, where his formative musical influences were country music and the Monkees, to his years in California, where he perfected his musical persona and came roaring out of the L.A. roots-punk circuit and into the national spotlight. McLeese takes us album by album from Yoakam?s firecracker debut, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. (1986), to his 2007 tribute to his mentor Buck Owens, Dwight Sings Buck. Yoakam emerges from these pages as a hard-working, honest artist, deeply committed to compositions that both preserve the heritage of country music and push its boundaries to carry the music, the tradition, and his listeners into new territories. VERDICT This lovingly crafted and compulsively readable biography is essential for fans of Yoakam and lovers of good music writing.?Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Evanston, IL

Who Should Play Whitney Houston in Rumored Biopic?
Bobby Brown is not the only person reportedly looking to profit off Whitney Houston's death.
According to Great Britain's The Daily Mail, plans for a Whitney biopic - which existed when the singer was still alive - are being fast-tracked, and a number of big names are lining up for the main role.
The leading contender? Rihanna, with Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson and Vivica A. Fox also allegedly up for consideration.
"Whitney knew about the project and was excited to see where it would lead," an insider says, comparing the film to What's Love Got To Do With It, a Tina Turner biopic that landed two Oscar nominations for Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.
Who do you think should portray Houston if this movie goes into production?

NBA ALL-STAR GAME: West squad is an L.A. story
ORLANDO, Fla. - What might seem a milestone isn't so original to Kobe Bryant.
So while four players from Los Angeles starting on the NBA's West All-Star team tonight is a landmark to some it's not that noteworthy to Bryant, who points out L.A. always represents when the biggest stars in the league gather for their annual weekend extravaganza.
And this year is no different.
Well, aside from one key twist.
"They all used to be in Lakers uniforms," Bryant said.
Not anymore.
The Lakers still have a standard contingent with Bryant and first-time All-Star Andrew Bynum in the starting lineup, but they're joined this time by Staples Center neighbors Blake Griffin and Chris Paul from the Clippers to give L.A. four of the West's five starters.
For the Lakers, it's no big deal. From Jerry West and Elgin Baylor to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson to Kobe and Shaquille O'Neal and Pau Gasol, they've always been deeply connected to All-Star weekend.
But this is a very big deal for the Clippers, a tormented franchise for which the All-Star break typically meant a recess from a beleaguered season in which they were typically buried in the standings.
It rarely meant actually sending a player to the game, so to be represented by two this year marks a turning point for a franchise usually on the outside looking in at these events.
With it comes the assuredness they are on the verge of being consistent,
viable contenders not just for All-Star selections, but NBA championships. They bring a better record into this break than the Lakers, and seemingly brighter playoff hopes with a more complete team, younger legs and considerably more athleticism.
And they have the attention of the Lakers.
"What the Clippers have done has been a great turnaround," Bryant said.
It's a healthy respect but also a begrudging one, a mood that's carried into the two meetings between
The Clippers' Blake Griffin, left, high-fives Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Love, right, during practice for the NBA All Star Game on Saturday in Orlando, Fla. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)
the Lakers and Clippers this year.Hard fouls have been the norm and sharp elbows aplenty.
And based the angry stares they share and the pointed comments directed at one another you get the feeling these two teams just don't like each other very much.
They might say emotions aren't heightened a bit when they play each other, but no one believes it, not the way they've gotten after it.
Besides, you don't share the same city and the same building and fight for the same fans and goals and not feel a little animosity toward the other guy, especially with the Clippers actually being relevant and the Lakers taking a step back from previous seasons.
Fact is, they get under each other's skin.
"It's definitely a rivalry," Bynum declared.
Which provides a neat little backdrop for today's game.
Can Bynum and Bryant set aside their differences with Griffin and Paul for the common goal of beating the East?
Can Paul share the ball with Kobe and Griffin communicate defensively with Bynum? You know, without tripping each other?
Can the Lakers and Clippers just get along?
Blake Griffin raised an eyebrow and clenched his jaw and when asked about it the other day.
"I guess I'm going to have to, huh?" Griffin said, feigning anger. "Our competitive nature will force us to set that aside and try to win the game. And then we can go back to the separation after that."
Griffin was kidding, of course.
For all the contentiousness on the court everyone agrees it's a byproduct of the fierce competiveness they share.
Two good teams, a handful of driven players and the shared objective of winning a championship make it almost inevitable emotions will overflow.
On the court.
"Off the court we're all friends," Bryant insists.
Griffin agrees, and even goes out of his way to downplay any rivalry between the Clippers and Lakers.
He does it out of respect, cognizant of the Clippers history relative to the Lakers and the fact they really haven't earned the right to call the Lakers their legitimate rivals.
"I think rivalries start when you play each other in the playoffs," Griffin
Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant, left, talks with the Clippers Chris Paul, right, during practice for the NBA All-Star Game. Durant is the only West starter not to come from an L.A.-based team. (Lynne Sladky/The Associated Press)
said. "I don't know the last time the Clippers were in the playoffs, I wasn't on the team, but that's when it starts. So that's not how we look at it."Paul, in fact, dismissed any talk of a Clippers-Lakers feud.
On the growing rivalry, he said: "Right now, (the Battle of L.A.) is 1-1. We've played twice this season. We beat them once, they beat us once."
On potentially meeting them in the playoffs, he was nonchalant.
"It is what it is," he said. "If we were to play them, it sure would be interesting."
And playing alongside Bryant and Bynum today will be no big deal.
"It's cool. I've done it every year," Paul said. "It was me, Kobe, and Pau last year and the year before that."
The Lakers look at things a little differently, the result of years and years of fighting off various challengers around the league.
For them, everyone is a potential rival. From the Boston Celtics to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers take on all challengers.
The Clippers, well they just never held up their end of the bargain, never fielded a team worthy of that kind of venom.
The Lakers wanted to beat them, but there was no great urge to embarrass them.
And typically the games unfolded before more Lakers fans than Clippers fans.
Rivalries are at their best when you don't just crush the opponent as you demoralize their fans, too.
"For a long time it was a game where Clipper fans were pretty quiet, they didn't really come out too hyped," Bynum said.
The addition of Griffin and Paul along with all the other young talent the Clippers changed that.
That's evident in the standings as well as the emotions on the court.
And it's no longer unusual to see Clippers fans out and about showing their love.
Game on, as far as the Lakers are concerned.
"It's a great game now," Bynum said.
In fact, it's a rivalry.
One they've put on hold.
"During the All-Star Game you get a chance to be around them and enjoy each other's company," Bryant said.
For a little while anyway.
"When we're playing on the court, competing, it's a different story," Bryant said.

Chicago Area Cats, Dogs & Other Pets Up For Adoption (2/24 ...
With March almost here and winter starting to wind down -- even with a little late-in-the-season Saskatchewan Screamer in there -- countless critters spending their days in Chicago-area animal shelters are likely feeling pretty restless with spring not too far away.
This week, HuffPost Chicago continues our partnership with several area shelters, featuring a weekly group of cats, dogs and rabbits currently available for adoption. This week, we're pretty confident we've picked out a spectacular bunch of furry friends and one of them you just might recognize from a certain television show.
To our knowledge, all animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up-to-date with their tests and vaccinations.
If this slideshow doesn't satisfy your cute animal fix, be sure to check out past features linked below the gallery either by scrolling down or clicking here. Many of the previously featured animals remain homeless -- those who've already been adopted are noted with a "Spoken For!" tag.

Bribes part of everyday life in Putin's Russia

MOSCOW (AP) ? Natalya Veselova has spent more than a year trying to get a Russian driver's license. What should have been a simple process has turned into a frustrating ordeal. The apparent reason? She refuses to bribe the Moscow police officers who administer the exam.
"They are doing their best to push people to pay bribes for licenses," said Veselova, the 33-year-old mother of a toddler, who has now failed the driving test seven times. Many others in her position give in and pay the expected bribe, typically the equivalent of several hundred dollars (euros).
Since Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000, corruption has penetrated deep into the fabric of everyday Russian life. Ordinary people find themselves giving money to police officers as well as doctors, teachers and government officials just for basic public services.
Resentment over this pervasive graft has helped fuel the protest movement against Putin, now Russia's prime minister, as he seeks to regain the presidency in a March 4 election. The huge demonstrations in Moscow in recent months were set off by a December parliamentary election won by Putin's party through apparent fraud, but the outrage tapped into far deeper anger over the corruption and cronyism that Putin has fostered.
Corruption was a problem in Soviet times and under Russia's first president, Boris Yeltsin. What has changed under Putin, experts say, has been the sheer amount of bribes paid to officials, which has skyrocketed along with incomes in Russia.
Graft also has become more institutionalized under Putin: Bosses tend not to punish their employees for taking bribes, but rather demand a share. Observers say the Kremlin has tolerated the wrongdoing because it's the main source of income for millions of bureaucrats whose support is crucial to Putin.
The extent of corruption in Russia is reflected in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index, where Russia is ranked 143rd out of 183 countries.
The corruption largely involves big business and government: Kickbacks are standard for many contracts; corrupt judges can be used to destroy or take over the business of a competitor; while friends and relatives of government officials are among the wealthiest people in the country.
But much of it is part of normal life.
Russians routinely pay to get a child into a school or receive medical treatment, even though both education and health care are supposed to be free.
One study estimates that Russia's 143 million people paid about 164 billion rubles ($5 billion) in "everyday" bribes in 2010. Half of Moscow residents and nearly 40 percent of all Russians have been in a situation where they felt a bribe was necessary to solve their problems, according to the joint research conducted last year by the Public Opinion Foundation and the Indem Foundation, which studies corruption.
The size of the average bribe has doubled over the past five years to 5,290 rubles ($178), said the study by the independent Russian research centers.
"Citizens are not actually rushing to pay bribes," said Elena Panfilova, director of Transparency International in Russia. "They pay when they're being cornered into a situation where they have no choice."
Many of the bribes go to Russia's traffic police, who among other things administer the driving exams.
Veselova began taking driving lessons in January 2011, hoping that by the summer she would be able to run errands with her young daughter in the backseat. In May, she was ready to apply for her license. She passed the written exam and the parking and maneuvering test, but then failed the road test.
She returned to the station, a commute of an hour and a half each way, to retake the exam six times. Each time, police officers found some fault with her driving. With Russia's driving code filled with an array of arcane regulations, officers have any variety of excuses to flunk an applicant.
"If an examiner doesn't like you, it's very easy for him to fail you," said Sergei Kanayev, chairman of the Moscow-based Federation of Car Owners.
Veteran driving instructors say applicants are routinely failed over technicalities and that many of their students end up paying despite being competent drivers. In most cases, police officers don't have to ask explicitly for a bribe. Their behavior during the test and advice to "come better prepared" are universally taken as a hint that money will have to be paid.
Kanayev estimates that 50 percent of Russians who fail the driving test end up paying a bribe to get their license. No figures are available largely because of the reluctance of people to admit to having bribed the police.
The traffic police failed to respond to requests for comment over a period of several weeks. Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, who commands Russia's police force, last year lauded some regional police officials for eradicating corruption, but acknowledged that it remains a problem in most regions.
Veselova's family and friends have been trying to persuade her to stop wasting time and pay the bribe.
Finding someone to "arrange" a license isn't difficult. Many drivers are happy to pass on the contacts of an intermediary who will make such arrangements, and thus spare the candidate from directly bribing the police officer. The service typically costs from 10,000 to 15,000 rubles ($330 to $500).
Veselova said a friend offered to arrange for her to pass the driving test in exchange for two bottles of cognac, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.
"I'm a believer in God. And this would mean deception," Veselova said. "I'm raising a child. How would I then tell her that she must always be honest and act honestly?"
Newspapers are full of reports of policemen arrested on charges of corruption. Last year, the head of the exams department and five other employees of a police station in Moscow were fired for "issuing driver's licenses for bribes." But the practice continues.
The health care and education systems are also rife with bribery.
For instance, bribes are routinely given to ambulance staff to take patients to better hospitals or to move a patient up on the waiting list for a needed operation. Relatives know that by slipping a few notes to a nurse, they may be able to assure their loved one gets better care.
Public schools are free, but some are more sought-after than others. Parents across Russia complain that directors of desirable schools will state that they are at capacity, then quickly hint that a place might be found if the parents were to make a contribution or donate equipment.
Universities are among the top offenders. One of Russia's most prestigious medical schools, the Pirogov Medical University in Moscow, was rocked by a scandal last summer when it was found to be selling about 500 spots that should have gone for free to those who scored the highest on admission exams.
Putin has responded to the protests by pledging to eliminate incentives for officials to take bribes. But as testament to the growing willingness to challenge Putin authority, bloggers have circulated a list of his vows to fight corruption dating back as far as 2000, none of which has had any notable effect.
"Corruption in Russia is not an isolated problem, but a deep-rooted system," said Georgy Satarov, the head of Indem and one of the leading Russian experts on graft.
After failing to pass the driving test within a three-month period, Veselova had to start the whole process over again. She recently resumed the effort and has again passed the written exam and the parking test.
With the driving test still ahead, she is more determined than ever not to pay a bribe.
"They got me so angry," Veselova said. "We pay our taxes, so why do I have to go and bow down to them?"

A Visual History of Ancient Miniature Horses [Slide Show]
Eight equines that paved the way for the massive modern horse
February 23, 2012
A tiny champion-to-be? The earliest horses were a far cry from the long-legged animals in today's stables. Here is a short visual history of their humble evolutionary beginnings. Image: Wikimedia Commons/Heinrich Harder
New research suggests that one of the earliest horses started out small?then got even smaller. As temperatures rose 55 million years ago during the ancient Eocene epoch, a North American horse species shrank from the size of a small dog to that of a house cat.
It would take millions of years and dozens of different genera until nature produced something approaching the modern horse (Equus ferus). The leggy show-jumper and powerful rodeo steed are of course products of modern breeding on top of eons of evolution. But the road to the arena and racetrack had humble beginnings.

GOP candidates want more on illegal immigration
MESA, Ariz. (AP) ? The Republican candidates say more must be done to combat illegal immigration.
The topic was a natural for Wednesday night's debate in Mesa, Ariz.
Newt Gingrich says he would devote as many resources as necessary to securing the U.S.'s southern border and that he would build two separate fences at the border to make it more difficult to cross illegally. He also says he'd send thousands more employees of the Homeland Security Department to border areas.
Mitt Romney says he would put more resources into securing the border and support programs that make it more difficult for illegal immigrants to work in the U.S. He says Arizona's approach to illegal immigration is a "model" for the country.
Rick Santorum says he would also beef up efforts to combat illegal immigration.

Sarah Michelle Gellar calls motherhood a balancing act
Sarah Michelle Gellar may be a celebrity, but she still faces the common challenge that many women face: balancing a career with motherhood.
The 34-year-old actress recently went back to work filming the CW series Ringer after taking some time off to care for her daughter Charlotte Grace, whom she gave birth to back in September 2009.
?It?s a learning curve, it?s definitely a learning process,? she told People magazine on Wednesday at a charity event in Los Angeles providing 40 expectant wives of military men with baby products such as cribs and bedding.???My hat goes off to anyone that juggles all of it because it?s very hard. You always feel like there?s a part of you that?s not giving enough to one, whether it?s work or your family or your charitable donations.?
Luckily for Gellar, she doesn?t have to do it alone. US Weekly reports her husband Freddie Prince Jr. is filling the void at home, taking on the role of a stay-at-home father.
Gellar said her husband is quite happy about the shift.
?He and Charlotte have too much fun,? she said. ?I?m jealous!?

Backcountry Skiing
On that trudge up the mountain I reflected on the fact that so much of hiking or mountain climbing is about feeling pain migrate to different parts of your body. For a while, my shoulders would scream, dissatisfied with the fit of my pack. Then, a duller, deeper pain in my right hip called out louder, only to be drowned out by the sensation of a blister, on the inside of my heel, rubbing rawer with every step. The heel held the floor for a long time, until joined by the shoulder for a kind of duet. Then I noticed a blister beginning on the left inside heel. And so it went, for hours and hours, the constant pain slowing time to a crawl. More than once I thought to myself, ?The skiing better be good.?
